LTL Pricing and the NMFC 2025

November 20, 2024

1:00pm Eastern

90-minute Virtual Workshop

The less-than-truckload (“LTL”) trucking industry has been moving toward new pricing methodologies. The National Motor Freight Classification (“NMFC”) has reclassified hundreds of articles with density-based classifications and major changes are coming in just a few months that will have widespread impact on shipping practices, freight rates and charges. Panelists representing the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, a major LTL carrier and LTL shipper will tell you what you need to know and should do to prepare for these changes.

Topics will include:

  • Criteria for establishing new density-related classification of articles
  • Equipment requirements, scales, cubic scanners and measurement devices
  • Problems for small or occasional shippers and those with multiple shipping locations
  • Changes to packaging and palletization to minimize costs
  • Potential for freight charge disputes – undercharges (balance due bills) and overcharges (refunds)
  • Impact on brokers and 3PL’s
  • Impact on freight forwarders or shippers of TL consolidations of LTL
  • Changes to bills of lading – USBOL, shipper prepared BOL’S, etc.
  • Impact on FAK rates
  • Liability limitations – released rates, tariff limitations based on density instead of value
  • Impact on TMS (transportation management systems) and software, procedures
  • Changes to shipper-carrier contracts
